The rabid ant-war Left, or as they are more commonly known , the grass roots of the Democratic Party, is all but making apologies over Iraq War votes a litmus test for the Democratic nomination. To her enormous credit, Hillary Clinton has refused to fold in the face of this juggernaut.
The Iraq War, like Vietnam before it, has pushed the Democrats into the arms of a pacifist and leftist rabble. Most Democratic Party aspirants give the nutroots of the party the red meat they desire. John Edwards and John Kerry now stumble over themselves to renounce their vote in support of the war. Ms. Clinton, on the other hand, has refused to give the frothing at the mouth crowd any satisfaction. Her new insistence, that she would rather lose votes than come out with a policy position she does not believe in, is a sign of immense political maturity, and a sign that she intends to put what she sees as the nation's best interests ahead of any interest group.
What she sees as the nations best interest will never square with my interpretation of same. But credit must be given where credit is due. Hillary Cinton's years beside her husband in the White House seems to have educated her to the seriousness and complexity of America's role in the world. It is well that she refuses to deny this fact while so many of her rivals grovel before an irresponsible mob.
UPDATE: Then again, it could always just be political expediency.
